I found 28 Sunday morning...only out about 2 hrs, and commenced to raining. All were small, tan colored, (grays). I looked all over down in the bottoms, and around the creeks...nothing. Found them on the SW facing hillsides, about 2/3 up...nothing on top of the ridges either. Almost all of them were on "bare" ground, next to Red Oak trees. Very, VERY little undergrowth coming up yet. Even the May apples are barely sprouted, so I'm thinking that the mushrooms are just starting up here. I'll go back in a couple days. I'm taking some flagging and going to try DH's trick (covering them over with leaves, let'm grow some more, come back and pick'em when they are bigger) if I find some more small ones. I must find the answer to that age old question..."I wonder if it will grow bigger " Could be one heck of a Turkey season, with mushrooms coming on strong. Heard one gobble at 9:45. Saw 5 toms, 3 on the drive out, and 2 on the property I hunt...each of them was alone with a hen. Found 2 dead deer, that concerns me. No signs of injury....one buck and one doe. The buck had already shed his antlers, but both deer had been dead for quite a while...eaten clean. I'm going to get some of the vertebrae and the shoulder blades for coyote set attractors next season. Be sure and "spray-down" if you are going out, I forgot to, and I brought home 4 ticks.
