i've caught a few out of a pond this year, but none from the lake yet. does anyone have a good early season pattern to reccomend? maybe one that can be fished from from the bank. it's still awful cold to get out on the boat.

well this is just what i have observed from many years of fishing...from the bank is not good rite now the fish are still in deep water but when the spawn hits the banks are really good!

I think they might still be holding to structure out in the middle, until the water warms and spawn starts. I have a spot off a bluff with deep water and have caught everything but crappie there. I think I will wait until the spawn hits before I start fishing for crappie.

I caught a male crappie at the Stockton Lake (Greenfield access) yesterday on a minnow a couple of feet down, about 10 yards off the bank.

IT"S ON !!! My Dad and I, caught 21 good keepers Thursday the 5th. Fishing around the docks at the Lake of the Ozarks. ALL crappie were caught in 15 - 20 ft of water, 6 to 12 feet down. It wasn't fast, and a lot of the bites were very soft...mid-day was best. Used black/chartreuse tube jigs, with crinkle tails, and had sparkles in the tails. Fished under a small quill float. The wind had the float moving, so it was giving that jig a good little dance. 1/16th oz. Nothing caught near the banks, or under the shallower part or the docks. All were caught out toward the deeper parts of the docks. Talk about a great dinner, oh yeah!

I caught a bunch of little crappie today in the creek (Lynn Branch), on minnows and smoke colored grubs. Some had trace amounts of eggs in them. It wont be long and they will be spawning, I dont think the cold weather will slow it down too much.
