The spot where I found them at was flooded last year, maybe I'll get lucky and it won't rain that much this spring. Of course there is always the old honey hole too, it'll never be flooded.

Now, Just wait a minute Jim, you know he's lying, I've lived here all of my life!!!
remember the "Red Morels"?? aka...Beefsteak mushrooms....they show up a couple weeks before the "gray Morels"
I have heard that "some" people don't stomach these to well, most folks do just fine with them. What I've studied suggests only trying a small amount the first time, before overly indulging.....Not that any of us would "over indulge" when eating fresh...hot...tasty...MUSHROOMS, battered to perfection, fried to a golden brown.....piled high on a platter, along with some fresh Crappie fillets, and a frosty cold one.. Dang you guys! Who started this (bleep bleep) thread? Oughta be a crime against this cruel and inhumane punishment.....That does it, I'm going Crappie Fishing right now!!!

they dont bother me. on a site called the great morel, it says they are poison. i ate a red one the size of a volleyball in one sitting last spring. i've always ate em, always find a few when lookin for whites. i knew they could come up a little earlier, but i didnt know how much earlier. i'll start lookin bout the middle of this month and see if i can find some early reds. thanks for the info.

yea mocat last year i found a red one like the size of a football didnt even pick due to the face that i was told by two different people that the would kill ya deader than heck, and that you could eat um just like a white morell. mushrooms arent anything to play around with at all pick the wrong one and u may of just cashed you last social security check! LOL but really all i was told when growing up was to only pick the greys and the whites and nothing else at all! some pics would be great of the reds if any of yall have them.. want to be sure of what iam picking this year for sure. foxpro

you let alot of good eatin go to waste. the stump of a red mushroom isnt that great, but the red flesh is excellent and it will not make the average person sick. if you eat white morels you will probably enjoy the reds. they are not a true morel, all morels have a hollow stem. i have a pic of one, but im having trouble finding it. i will post the first one i find this year. if you think you have one, post it and i will id it for ya.

I dont ever find very many reds, but I dont care for them too much either. I'd rather have the white or grey morels.
